Spring travel is a wonderful way for everyone to shake off the winter doldrums and seek some much needed outdoor adventure. With an almost endless list of spring destinations, we’ve gone through dozens of top ten lists to create our own top ten places to travel this spring.
There are more spring vacation top ten lists than you can shake the proverbial stick at, but they each focus on a particular angle. Many are for spring breakers, which we purposely avoided as being the province of the partying crowd.
That still left us with a slew of options to draw from including budget, exotic, family, and a few other top ten list focuses to choose from. We decided to create our list from the somewhat nontraditional choices that ended up on the most top ten lists that we could find.
Let’s start domestically with a great mainstay of spring travel: Washington D.C. Perfect weather, cherry blossoms everywhere, and an unending list of fantastic attractions to suit everyone. In addition to the best national sights, landmarks, museums and walking tours, D.C. has an unending source of activities and attractions. Let’s not forget the green spaces with nature and parks as well as theatre, concerts, and much more to satisfy everyone’s taste. Every group has attractions geared to their cultural, ethnic, and personal interests so boredom is beyond possibility.
With dozens of festivals in May alone, mild temperatures, and an uncountable number of attractions both indoors and out, San Diego is an ideal travel destination in the spring.
A three-mile boardwalk and sandy Mission Beach, the Flower Fields of Carlsbad (San Diego North County) and the wildflowers of the Anza-Borrego State Park offer an experience the whole family can enjoy. We won’t even go into the many attractions on and in the water. There are also many arts, theater, indoor and outdoor cultural activities, sporting events, festivals, and festivities to keep visitors entertained during the spring time months in San Diego.
You can’t beat New Orleans in the spring as a travel destination. For many people, the best time to visit is April and May. This puts you in the sweet spot in terms of missing the huge partying crowds during the Mardi Gras season in February and March and before the stifling heat. While the Jazz and Heritage Festival are more well known, there are other great opportunities to enjoy New Orleans culture such as the Bayou Boogaloo, New Orleans Wine and Food Experience, New Orleans Greek Festival, and the New Orleans Oyster Festival all taking place in May.
Music, arts, and culture are certainly the hallmarks of Nashville, but there are a whole host of outdoor attractions and plenty of ways to enjoy the beautiful outdoors with every type of activity that you could hope for. If its festivals you want, Nashville has got at least one to fit your interests.
When we expand our horizons to Canada, we certainly find it all in terms of outdoor activities in some of the greatest weather of the year. From the big cities like Toronto to more remote locales like the Canadian Rockies, Canada has it all in terms of culture, food attractions, and festivals to fit everyone’s interest.
One of the best things about visiting Puerto Rico is that you are still in a U.S. province while enjoying that taste of the Caribbean style with beautiful beaches and plenty of resort experiences. Food, music, and culture are all to be had in Puerto Rico. Whatever you dream about doing in the great outdoors, you can find in Puerto Rico. It certainly helps that the beauty and varied landscapes make this an unbelievable destination in the spring.
From the city’s bustling souks, soothing hammams, and lush tropical gardens to its unbelievable historical attractions, Marrakesh brings it all together with ideal temperatures in May. Marrakesh has unbelievably luxurious hotel rooms at reasonable prices in addition to the elegant boutique properties, often called riads, which are small hotels in buildings originally constructed as private homes.
Madrid and Barcelona are just two of the standout locations in Spain that are ideal travel destinations in the spring. From the mountains to the seaside, you can have it all in Spain. Try Walking El Camino, Hiking in Picos de Europa, and remember that Spain is all about soccer, food, art, architecture, festivals, and fashion in addition to an endless list of attractions and activities.
In addition to the shops, attractions, and varied beauty of London, May brings some of the biggest outdoor events and festivals that provide music, theatre and other attractions to some of the city’s biggest parks. From the historical attractions to Warner Bros Studio Tour and beyond, London has it all in the spring.
Italy in May has many spring festivals that only add to the mild temperatures, scenic beauty, architecture, and attractions that Italy provides. Although spring is high tourist season, you can get off the beaten path to smaller villages and towns that can provide a unique experience far from the maddening crowds.
